Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover and neighbors in Shreveport's MLK neighborhood say they've had enough of the landfill fire.

The fire has been burning underneath the Harrelson Materials Management landfill since 2010.

The owner, Michael Harrelson, says it's a subterranean fire that occasionally flares up on the surface. A recent flare up has been burning since June 4, 2014.

Harrelson says his workers and the Shreveport Fire Department have had to work around the clock to keep the fire contained.

Community members made their concerns known Wednesday night during a meeting at Southern University in Shreveport.

Mayor Glover spoke about the landfill's violations for an hour before hearing from neighbors.

He outlined list of violations dating back to 1994. Glover also mentioned the fact that the city is in four active lawsuits with Harrelson: three are zoning issues, and the fourth concerns the fire.

“They don't have the proper zoning to operate,” says Glover. “They have exceeded the initial zoning that was granted to them way back in the 1990's, and they continue to pile up DEQ violations upon DEQ violations."

Glover says he's sending a letter to Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal to get the landfill's operations regulated.

"This is a situation that is beyond unacceptable, and that we believe should come to an end," says Glover.

Scott Wolverton with Shreveport Fire Department says fire crews don’t have a timeline on when the current flare up will be completely out.
