Swepco crews work around the clock to restore power

900 customers are still without power as of 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The ice storm that swept across the I-20 corridor left more than 47,000 Swepco customers without power.

By 10 a.m. Wednesday, that number was reduced to around 6,500. By 5 p.m. Wednesday, that number was reduced to 1,800.

Swepco has 1,000 people working to replace fallen power poles and lines. 500 of those workers were contractors from other Southern states.

"We had several hours overnight of slow freezing rain and it builds up on power lines, builds up on tree limbs, they sag, they fall, they tear up our equipment, knock down our transformers,” said Spokesperson Scott McCloud.  “So, it’s a big project to rebuild all that and put the lights back on."

Swepco hopes to restore power in smaller towns by 6 p.m. Wednesday. In Shreveport, the area hardest hit, the company hopes to have all the lights back on by Thursday evening. Swepco officials urge people to not touch downed power lines. Also, never plug your generator into the circuit box; instead, plug your appliances into the generator. Otherwise, it could injure the crews working on the lines.
