Take two: Centenary wins matinee doubleheader over ETBU

Gents rebound from opening day loss with doubleheader sweep
SHREVEPORT, La. – The Centenary baseball team opened its 2014 home slate gathering a doubleheader over East Texas Baptist on Sunday afternoon. The Gents move to 2-1 on the season as ETBU falls to 1-2.

Four Gents posted multiple hit affairs during the double dip with Chris Jones gathering a total of four hits on the day, Kody Carson and Taylor Reed each tallied two hits in the second game of the day with Michael Schimpf going 2 for 3 in the opener.

Layton Tromba claimed the win in the opener tossing seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits. The junior also fanned seven batters in the complete game decision.

Paul Arcement tossed seven frames in the night cap for the victory. The sophomore struck out five and allowed one run on just six hits. Grant Debevec tallied his first save of the season tossing the two final innings with a walk and strikeout.

A four-run, fifth inning helped propel the Maroon and White to the win in the opener after falling behind 2-1. An error to start the inning and three hits assisted in the run production in the inning as Schimpf doubled and Hyatt and Carson each singled in the frame. Jones, Nic Parrott along with Carson each gathered RBI.

ETBU attempted a rally in the seventh inning plating a run, but a diving catch by Parrott stranded the Tigers’ two, game-tying runs in scoring position and secured the first win of the season.

The Gents plated the first two runs of the second outing in their first trip to the plate as Taylor Reed drove in both runs with a single to left field. Centenary extended its lead to 4-0 with two runs in the fifth as Reed doubled to push Christian Sebastien and Carson across the dish.

The Tigers registered their only run of the game in the sixth inning as Tyler Bates scored on a sacrifice fly by Phillip Windam.

Centenary added its final run of the day in the eighth as Schimpf scored on a Jones single.

Centenary returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 11 as the Gents travel to Jarvis Christian. First pitch of the twinbill is slated for 2 p.m.
