Hospitals have also treated 178 people for injuries, including five Americans.

Meanwhile, the focus of the crash investigation has turned to the driver of the train after security video showed it derailed after speeding around a tight curve.

Authorities said Thursday excessive speed has been identified as the likely main cause of the accident.

Sources close to the investigation say the driver stated immediately after the crash that he had been traveling at 118 mph on the curve, which had a speed limit of 49 mph.

Spain has declared three days of national mourning over the crash.
