DeSoto Parish continues efforts to keep deadly amoeba at bay

A new strategy to fight a brain-eating parasite in DeSoto Parish is working just fine.
A new strategy to fight a brain-eating parasite in DeSoto Parish is working just fine.

It's been nearly two weeks since Water Works District No.1 started its chlorine burn to clean out the pipes in the water system.

Last month the Centers for Disease Control discovered Naegleria Fowleri at five different sites.

CDC officials advised the district to stop using chloramines, a chlorine-ammonia solution and start using straight chlorine.

Water Works District No.1 Administrator John Neilson says they are looking for a way to stay on pure chlorine.  Neilson believes residents will have a better quality of water without the ammonia.

The CDC is expected to return in late December to retest the locations that tested positive for the deadly, brain eating amoeba.
