East Texas college student earns special honor for achievement

A freshman at Wiley College is getting a rare opportunity.

Today Cameron Smith will meet with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office in recognition of his achievements as a member of the St. Louis, MO, Urban Debate League.

In the 2012-2013 competition year, Smith and his debate partner were named two of the top eight speakers in the National Association of Urban Debate League’s Championship Tournament. 

Smith is a new member of Wiley’s Melvin B. Tolson/Denzel Washington Forensics Society which is a competitive speech and debate team, affiliated with Pi Kappa Delta, the National Forensics Association, and the American Forensics Association.

The team competes in debate, interpretation, public address and limited preparation events.
