Nidal Hasan, the Army major on trial for the 2009 Fort Hood shooting that left 13 people dead, will continue to represent himself after defense lawyers asked the judge to allow them to take over.

The defense lawyers had only been on standby for Hasan, in case he needed them, but on Wednesday asked to take the lead in his defense, accusing Hasan of trying to fulfill a death wish.

The judge sided with Hasan, allowing him to continue to represent himself.

Hasan is accused of killing 13 people and injuring more than 30 others during the Fort Hood shooting rampage.

He attempted to plead guilty, which is not allowed in death penalty cases under military law.
