Gas leak forces evacuation at elementary school

More than 400 students had to be evacuated from Pine Grove Elementary after a gas leak.
More than 400 students had to be evacuated from Pine Grove Elementary after a gas leak.

Shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday a private construction crew ruptured a 2-inch gas main at the intersection of Stewart Lane and Dove Street. Shreveport Fired Department and CenterPoint Energy responded and monitored the neighborhood for combustible gas levels. No gas was present in the neighborhood or at Pine Grove Elementary but as a precaution students were evacuated from the school. Residents near the leak were allowed to stay in their homes. CenterPoint closed the flow of gas through the broken pipe at 11:15 a.m.

Shreveport Fired Department Chief of Special Operations and Safety, Scott Wolverton, says pilot lights were shut off at the schools. "Potentially with the release of natural gas you always have the potential for it to collect and find an ignition source so that's why you take those measures to make sure people are safe," he says. Wolverton added that breezy conditions Thursday morning likely helped clear the area of gas.

Students were able to return to the school late Thursday morning after crews did an additional check and found no gas in the air. No injuries were reported.
