Local educator and civic leader dies

Funeral services for local educator and civic leader Doretha Audreye Moss Barnes will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Antioch Baptist Church, 1057 Texas Ave. in Shreveport.

Funeral services for local educator and civic leader Doretha Audreye Moss Barnes will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Antioch Baptist Church, 1057 Texas Ave. in Shreveport.

As an educator, Mrs. Barnes taught Physical Education at Booker T. Washington High School, serving as girls’ basketball coach and sponsor of the Lionettes.

In 1947, Mrs. Barnes was married to the late Dr. Leonard Barnes, who also served as a coach and administrator at Booker T. Washington High School before going to Southern University Shreveport from 1967, where he served as chancellor for two decades.

Mrs. Barnes was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, The Links, the YWCA Board of Directors, the Shreveport Women’s Commission, 1,000 Women, and the Northwest Louisiana Chapter of the American Diabetes Association Board of Directors.

She is survived by her brother, Donald Moss.

An Evening of Remembrance will be held from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Winnfield Funeral Home, 3701 Hollywood Ave.
