Local self defense expert provides tips for shopping safety

It’s a festive time of year to be out shopping, eating and attending events. It’s also the perfect time to prepare to defend yourself against predators.
It’s a festive time of year to be out shopping, eating and attending events. It’s also the perfect time to prepare to defend yourself against predators.
Local self-defense expert, Sergeant Sarah Rhodes, teaches women how to prevent being becoming a target for criminals. She believes that creating physical distance between you and a potential threat could save your life.
"The first thing I would do is attempt to take some steps back and keep that distance. Don’t let them close in on you, but also create some noise.  If you feel uncomfortable create some noise, noise the last thing they want because noise is attention, and attention equals failure," said Rhodes.
If you can't find a way to get away from someone, try to injure vulnerable spots like stomping the instep on top of their feet, kicking their shins and punching their nose.
