A man who is accused of assaulting his step-mother and trying to burn down her house is behind bars in Harrison County.

The incident happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. Monday at a mobile home in the 3600 block of FM 2208.

Investigators say James Cameron, 21, allegedly struck his stepmom Tonnya Cameron after a verbal and physical altercation.

Then when Tonnya retreated to her bedroom, James supposedly poured used cooking oil through the interior of the home and gasoline around the rear of the house and ignited it.

Tonnya escaped the flames and was transported to Good Shepherd Hospital where she was treated for smoke inhalation.

Authorities say the home was destroyed by the fire.

James was booked into the Harrison County Jail and charged with assault causing bodily injury to a family member and arson causing bodily injury.
