More retail stores announce plans to open on Thanksgiving

K-Mart to open at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving.
More major retailers are revealing plans to move ‘Black Friday’ opening times to Thanksgiving Day. It’s a trend that started in 2010 when Sears announced they would open doors on Thanksgiving.

This year Sears Holdings announced that its K-Mart stores would open at 6 a.m. Thanksgiving morning and remain open for 41-straight hours. K-Mart is not alone. Toys R Us has moved its opening time to 5 p.m. Analysts predict holiday sales to be sluggish this year and with Thanksgiving falling later on the calendar stores will lose a week of holiday shoppers jamming aisles in 2013.

Local shoppers say they aren’t likely to take advantage of the extra day. “I don’t want to leave my family on Thanksgiving Day to save a few dollars, it may sound weird, but to me I value being with them and forming memories over saving a few bucks,” says Miranda Brokenberry of Shreveport.
Kohl’s and Wal-Mart will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving.
