Caddo parish's newest commissioner is officially on the job, and he's doing his part to improve animal control services.
Commissioner Jerald Bowman, District 5, is heading up a new committee that will address improving the operations at the parish animal control facility.  The up to 15-person committee will include parish commissioners and animal welfare professionals including a veterinarian and an attorney.
Part of the committee's focus is updating old ordinances that have been on the books for decades.
"The shelter itself from it began has made great strides.  What we want to do is make sure that things are in place and needs are met.  Not only the animals, but for animal owners - make it productive and progressive," said Jerald Bowman, Commissioner District 5.
The committee will also look at ways to decrease the current euthanasia rates.
According to the most recent report from January through August of 2013, 80% of dogs and cats brought into the shelter were euthanized.  The numbers don't include July due to incomplete data for that month.
