Louisiana state Sen. Barrow Peacock (R-Shreveport-Bossier City) will join a select group of legislators from across the country in July to participate in the 2013 Emerging Leaders Program at the University of Virginia.

The national program, sponsored by the non-profit, non-partisan State Legislative Leaders Foundation (SLLF) and the University of Virginian Darden School of Business, is designed to enhance the leadership potential and vision of policymakers judged to be potential future state leaders. Senate President John Alario nominated Peacock for the program.

In his recommendation, Alario said Peacock has proven to be "a dedicated legislator who does his homework. "He is always engaged in important policy discussions and brings valued ideas to the table. It was my pleasure to nominate him for the leadership seminar and I am thrilled he's been selected to participate."

Peacock, who is serving his first term in the Senate, said he was honored to be selected to attend the event. In addition to gathering information, he said he is looking forward to exchanging ideas with other young legislators across the nation.

A total of 50 legislators representing 48 states will participate in the 2013 Emerging Leaders Program. To participate in the program, legislators must have recently begun their public service in the legislature and must be nominated by their peers. One of the primary criteria for selection is the legislator's commitment to public service.

The 2013 Emerging Leaders Program is scheduled to begin Monday, July 8,to Thursday, July 11, at the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville. The State Legislative Leaders Foundation provides scholarships to state legislators chosen for the leadership program that cover the cost of participation.
