New Orleans Saints football player Pierre Thomas and Wal-Mart are teaming up to make sure families have food on their tables.

Today Thomas and Wal-Mart are helping kick off the first annual Defeat Hunger Bowl food drive for the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana.

Individual non-perishable food items can be donated at participating Walmart locations throughout the area.  $5 pre-packaged bags of non-perishables are also available for purchase.

Thomas said, "Food is one of our most basic necessities, yet there are hundreds of thousands of people in Louisiana who don't get enough of it."

Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana Executive Director, Martha Marak, said, "January is a tough time because people tend to focus on the issue more around the holidays, but hunger is a year-round problem."

The food drive runs through Feb. 9.
