Shreveport church rings in the New Year with 42 hours of prayer

A local church has already started ringing in the New Year, and they don't plan to stop until 2014 is officially here.
A local church has already started ringing in the New Year, and they don't plan to stop until 2014 is officially here.
Calvary Missionary Baptist Church is hosting a 42 hour marathon prayer session.
"No, you can't sleep when the Lord got you and is in control!" said Margaret Phillips Jackson, parishioner.
The church is full of people, music and a positive energy you can't ignore.
"There's no party like a Holy Ghost party, and a Holy Ghost party don’t stop," said Gant.
Pastor Joe Gant started this new year's tradition 32 years ago.  42 hours of fellowship, prayer and hope that next year will be better.
"Every year we've had it I've been here and that ought to tell you what it means to me," said James Smith.
Pastors and parishioners from other churches are invited to preach and pray together.
"Pull people from across the city.  its no longer a Calvary event.  its a citywide event," said Pastor Joe Gant, Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.
Blocks of time are dedicated to subjects close to Pastor Gant's heart like local officials, police and fire fighters, and education.
"I think that’s the major thing we need in Caddo is to get education system going because everything else feeds off of that," said Gant.
Gant loves the challenge of not just staying awake, but keeping the energy up for the entire 42 hours.
"Secret is not to eat a whole lot.  I basically drink more tea, hot chocolate - I'll eat a little salad, but I don’t eat a lot because if you eat you're going to get sleepy," said Gant.
Between the music, excitement - even dancing - there's not much of a difference between this church and a New Year’s Eve party.
"Years ago, I used to be in the night club.  Right now, I'm getting the same joy full-feeling inside me until the new year," said Jackson.
If you're interested in getting a little - or a lot of – prayer done before 2014, the community is welcome to come out anytime to Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.
