It took a Caddo Parish jury less than an hour Friday night to convict a Shreveport man of second degree murder in the May 2012 death of a former Loyola College Prep football standout, Johathan Simo, 26.

In addition to the second degree murder conviction, LaQuinn Deon Murray, 24, was convicted of attempted second degree murder in the shooting of 18-year-old Devon Marshall at the same time Simo was killed.

The shooting took place at the La Tierra Drive Apartments in West Shreveport.

Shreveport police officers were dispatched after a report of two men being shot near the front of the apartment complex in the 6100 block of Tierra Drive. Officers found both Simo and Marshall had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Simo was pronounced dead at the scene, while Marshall was transported to LSU Medical Center with serious injuries.

An investigation at the scene revealed both victims were shot by a single assailant  who drove up in a white SUV. The suspect  got out of the vehicle and opened fire on the two men, hitting Marshall first and then Simo.

SPD detectives were able to develop Murray as a suspect, and subsequently went to his home and took him into custody. Following interviews at the police station, Murray was arrested and charged with one count of second degree murder and one count of attempted second degree murder.

Prosecutors were Caddo Assistant District Attorneys Bill Edwards and Aaron Crawford, and Kurt Goins was the defense attorney.

The penalty for second degree murder is life in prison without possibility of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.  The penalty for attempted second degree murder ranges from 10 to 50 years in prison without possibility of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
