Texarkana USA tries to set World Record

It was a sea of hats in Texarkana Friday morning.
It was a sea of paper hats in Texarkana.

Friday is America Recycles Day.

Thousands of students from both sides of the line participated.
The event is meant to raise awareness about the benefits of recycling.
Some of the students sang, a proclamation was read, and other guests spoke.

But why not break a World Record at the same time?

Participants wore decorative head gear to break a record for most worn recycled paper hats.

"My hat is like I got a pony tail right here, and there's a chin strap that holds it on," said 2nd Grader Jalel Salie. "I'm feeling really good about wearing my hat in front of all these people."

Schools on both sides of the line participated.

It included Pleasant Grove, Liberty Eylau and Texas and Arkansas.

It'll be a while before information is released on if Texarkana broke a record, but officials say the figures look good.

At least 2,300 people were at the event wearing hats.

Stay tuned to Channel 6 for updates on if the record was broken.
