Toys for Tots officially kicks off

It's a big day for the United States Marine Corps.
It's a big day for the United States Marine Corps.

Saturday was the official start to their annual "Toys for Tots" toy drive.

Here in Shreveport, the 7th annual "Toys for Tots Motorcycle Rally" marked the occasion.

It was a scene you had to see to believe.

"When we get on those bikes and we take off, and you see that lineup it's just like wow," said biker Gaye Stalvey.

Hundreds of motorcyclists came from around the state to ride for a cause.

"There's lots of children and families in Shreveport/Bossier that maybe aren't as fortunate as the rest of us," said motorcyclist Kevin Higginbotham. "We'd like to make sure they get something extra during Christmas time."

It's called the Toys for Tots Motorcycle Rally.

People bring donations and then ride as one to start the giving season in the right gear.

"It's a way for bikers to give back to the community," said Major Allen McBroom.

More than 300 toys are expected to be collected at this event, but officials say it's just the start. That the 2013 Toys for Tots toy drive will hopefully be the best year yet.

"There are a lot of families who need our assistance and if we can give just a bit more, that's the reason why we do it," said McBroom.

Many might think toys and motorcyclists are an unusual pair, but these riders proved otherwise.

"It's a camaraderie, it's a brotherhood and when we get together and get a chance to support a cause it's an awesome feeling," said McBroom.

"Everybody makes a difference, it takes a community," said Stalvey.

Toys can be donated for the next seven weeks.

Officers hope many will come and help the cause.
