Welcoming the new year southern style

Hoping for a lucky and prosperous new year? There are some foods for that.

Hoping for a lucky and prosperous new year? There are some foods you can eat for that.

There are many ways people across the world celebrate the new year.

In Spain, many will eat 12 grapes at midnight. Each of the grapes represent a month and if it's sour, that means it'll be a bad month, if it's sweet, that means the month will be full of luck.

Other countries will do something different.

Here in Shreveport and in the south, many will eat a good portion of black eyed peas and collard greens.

The black eyed peas represent luck and the collard greens represent wealth.

Cornbread also will be eaten to represent gold.

Stewed tomatoes can be consumed for health.

NBC 6 News went to Strawn's to see how they prepare their traditional meal.

It's one that they only prepare on the first.
