A blast of arctic air is hitting much of the eastern third of the country with some of the coldest temperatures seen so far this fall.

Near Philadelphia the leaves haven't finished falling, but that didn't stop the snow.

Across the east communities woke up to temperatures 20 degrees below average.

A light snow dusted the streets in Lexington, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee, while further north New Buffalo, Michigan got more than four inches.

Weather Channel meteorologists say the cold front is pushing southward, bringing freezing temperatures to the Deep South and Texas.

"What's really going to be bone chilling is the wind that accompanies those temperatures wind chills down into Atlanta and Charlotte are going to be in the teens by sunrise," warns meteorologist Tom Niziol.

The cold air is expected to move out by the weekend, just as another arctic blast will be heading south with its sights on the Rockies.
