As school lets out and summer vacations begin you may be looking for a workout routine you can take on-the-go. TRX or Total Resistance Exercise may be the perfect workout for you because it is portable and one you can pretty much do anywhere.
TRX was created just a few years ago by a navy seal who needed a way to workout while deployed. It involves a set of straps that you can sling over a door or any stable object and use to work almost every muscle in your body. Darlene Ainsco has been teaching TRX classes at Element Fitness in Shreveport for three years. She says either your hands or feet are in the TRX straps at all times. You use your own body weight to work arm, leg and abdominal muscles and this increases strength, flexibility, cardiovascular health and is great for toning up without bulking up! "Body weight exercises are tough. A lot of people might can lift weights in the back but you can't do a pushup, can't do a pull up. It's exhausting, you're sore when you leave, it works your abs really well because you're unstable and you can do exercises on this you can't do in the back," says Darlene.
Now anyone can do TRX because there are a wide variety of modifications available that help make moves easier, or harder, depending on your fitness level. While you can buy your own set of these straps online for about $200, Darlene suggests taking a class to get used to using and setting these straps up safely. Classes are available here at Element on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6 pm. They are also available at several Willis Knighton Wellness Centers and at "Body by O" in Shreveport.
