Arkansas Governor Hutchinson highlights key statistics in COVID-19 update after second spike of positive cases

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The death toll from coronavirus in Arkansas stands at 115 with 5,775 positive cases in the state, Governor Asa Hutchinson announced in a May 23 news conference. The governor was joined by Department of Health Secretary Dr. Nate Smith as they released the latest information on the impact of COVID-19 in the state. Additional details they provided:

Governor Asa Hutchinson spoke about how we saw a peak of cases 30 days ago, and now are seeing a second peak after many restrictions have been relaxed.

“We know have a record level of testing which allows for contact tracing to be more effective. We have improved our early warning system.”

He spoke about hospitalization and said that we are in good shape now, and we will be in the future to come.

“If cases go up, but not hospitalizations, we are identifying positive cases that are not very ill”

He also spoke about positivity rate and that the state is well below the 10% benchmark even though we are testing more and more, we are getting ahead of the spread.

On deaths Hutchinson said that if you look at it per capita, Arkansas has one of the lowest in the country.

Lastly he established that we need to be disciplined in the personal safety habits.

“There are more than we knew before that are out there, we need to be careful.”

He spoke about the PUA and many more payments are being processed. 12,930 claimants have been approved.
