Mother, step-father charged in death of 11-year-old Arkansas boy

STAR CITY, Ark. (AP) — The mother and step-father of an 11-year-old Arkansas boy are charged with capital murder in the boy’s death.

During a court appearance Tuesday, 38-year-old David Black and 30-year-old Mary Black were charged in the Sunday death of 11-year-old Joseph Carsello in Star City, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southeast of Little Rock.

Outside the courtroom, both Blacks denied killing the boy.

Lincoln County District Judge Phillip Green ordered that both be assigned a public defender and remain in custody without bond.

Prosecutor Clint Todd said the boy died of multiple blunt force trauma, including injuries to his head. Todd said the Blacks acknowledged hitting the boy in the face “with their hands for back-talking.”

Todd sad the couple also reported that the boy had fallen and hit his head on a toolbox.
