We are so excited to have Gracie Stover in the studio with us to talk about the dangers of distracted driving!

To celebrate April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month in Arkansas, Miss Greater Hot Springs, Gracie Stover, is hosting a statewide art competition to emphasize the dangers of texting and driving. The contest is intended to increase awareness and educate the public about the importance of not texting behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Any grades 1-12 in Arkansas are eligible for the contest. Any medium (i.e. markers, pencil, charcoal, paint, etc.) may be used. One submission per classroom will be considered for judging.

One $500 prize will be given to a class in grades 1-7, and one $500 prize will be given to a class in grades 8-12. The prize money will be awarded to the teacher of the winning classroom to be used at their discretion for classroom education or activities. Lamar Sign Company will display the winning artworks on roadside digital billboards throughout the state.

Participants should complete the following steps to be eligible for the contest: the teacher should send a picture of the artwork the class has chosen via email to survivedonttextanddrive@gmail.com, and share the art on their personal social media accounts tagging gracie_stove and using #survivedonttextanddrive. Please include teacher name, grade, and school in the email. Entries will be accepted throughout the month of April.

“In the time it takes to send or receive a text, a driver’s eyes have been diverted from the road for at least 4.6 seconds – the same time it would take to drive the distance of a football field at 55 miles per hour blind,” said Stover. “A life is worth more than a text message and that is why I care about Survive: Don’t Text and Drive.”

Gracie said that she was inspired to start a movement after she met a mother at an AT&T event, whose daughter was killed by a distracted driver.
