TEXARKANA, Ark. (KTAL/KMSS) – A suspect has been arrested in connection with the overnight murder of a Texarkana teenager.
Wednesday morning Miller County deputies arrested 19-year-old Markelle Davis following the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Jaqualyn Paxton.
Investigators believe Davis shot Paxton around midnight following an argument in the parking lot of the Village Park South Apartments in the 2200 block of East Street. “When officers arrived, the victim, Ms. Paxton, had already been taken to hospital by friends in a personal vehicle,” said Sgt. Kristi Bennett.
Paxton later died from her injuries. Authorities said there were numerous witnesses and would only confirm that Paxton was shot in the upper portion of her body. Davis, the suspect in the case, was located on East Street in his vehicle a short while later. “TAPD officers and Miller County deputies located the suspect a short time later close to where the incident had occurred,” said Bennett.
Paxton’s friend, Aaliyah Pearson, said she was there when the shooting happened. “That just killed the inside of me, this is my friend. This is not a friend I just met. I grew up with this girl.”
Friends describe Paxton as a hard working, happy person. She graduated from Arkansas High School in 2018. Paxton’s cousin, Tihj Lavalais said, “She wanted to work with kids and all that because we used to be in child development class together. She wanted to be like a pediatrician or something like that.”
Davis has been charged with 1st Degree Murder.
