BOWIE CO., Texas (KTAL/KMSS) – The Bowie County Sheriff’s Office confirms the second victim has died as a result of a double shooting late Sunday afternoon.

Thomas Wayne Lawson Sr., 51, was already charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the fatal shooting of 63-year-old Roger Franklin Cowley and the wounding of a second victim.

The shooting happened just before 5 p.m. Sunday at a home on Horseshoe Loop, where a 911 caller reported that a man had just shot two people. Deputies arrived to find Lawson still armed with a rifle and both victims shot in a wooded area behind the home. Cowley was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second victim, identified Tuesday as 60-year-old Gordan Ray Walls of Texarkana, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injures but died early Monday afternoon, according to deputies.

According to the sheriff’s office, a witness on the scene said that he heard the gunshots and then spoke with Lawson, who told him he had shot the two victims.

Lawson was arrested Sunday and charged with murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The aggravated assault charge for the shooting of Gordan Walls was upgraded to murder after his death Monday. Deputies say he was also found to be in possession of a small amount of suspected methamphetamine and was also charged with possession of a controlled substance under 1 gram.

Lawson remains in custody at the Bi-State Detention Center. His bond was set at $1,000,000 for the initial charge of murder and $5,000 for the charge of possession of a controlled substance. The bond for the secondary charge of murder has not yet been set as of Tuesday afternoon.
