UPDATE: Corporal Michael Paul Middlebrook, a nine-year veteran of the Lafayette Police Department, was killed in the line of duty, according to the Lafayette Police Department. Corporal Middlebrook was married and the father of a 3-year-old daughter and step-daughters.
A Thibodeaux native, Middlebrook spent “the entirety of his career in the patrol section helping and truly serving the community, as was his passion”, said LPD spokesman Karl Ratcliff.
“The Lafayette Police Department is devastated by this sudden loss. We ask that you keep Corporal Middlebrook’s family and the Lafayette Police Department in your thoughts and prayers.”
A suspect is in custody at the Lafayette Parish Jail on one count of first degree murder and three counts of attempted murder. According to Master Trooper Brooks David, Ian Paul Howard, 28, of Lafayette, was arrested earlier today.
Howard was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on the following charges:
1 count 1st Degree Murder of a Police Officer
1 count of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer
2 counts of Attempted Murder.
David says the case remains an active investigation.
A Lafayette police officer was fatally shot Sunday night after responding to an aggravated battery and shots fired call at a convenience store on Moss Street.
According to State Police Master Trooper Brooks David, the shooting happened just after 10 p.m. Sunday at the Big Boy convenience store.
David said the unidentified officer was responding to the scene when he was shot and killled. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other people suffered non life threatening injuries, and were transported to local hospitals, David said.
A suspect, who police say fled on foot, has been captured and taken into custody.
No further information was released.
