5 dead after shooting at Maryland newspaper; suspect in custody

Several people were shot dead Thursday afternoon at the Capital Gazette, a newspaper in the Maryland capital, Annapolis, officials said.

Anne Arundel County Executive Steven Schuh confirmed the fatalities at a press conference.

Three senior law enforcement officials who were briefed on the shooting said the gunman, a white man, was in custody. They said it is believed that he used a shotgun.

Authorities were responding Thursday afternoon to a shooting at the Capital Gazette, a newspaper in the Maryland capital, Annapolis, officials said.

A reporter at the Capital Gazette told The Baltimore Sun, which owns the Capital Gazette, that multiple people had been shot.

Anne Arundel County Police along with the Baltimore office of federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said they were responding to the shooting.
