The mother of a 5-year-old is dead after she was struck by a stray bullet while sitting on the couch.

The shooting happened around 7:45 p.m. Saturday at the Bienville Apartments, Phase 1 on Military Rd.

When authorities arrived they determined that an altercation between three people in the parking lot led to an exchange of gunfire.

A five-year-old resident told a Ringgold police officer that their mother would not wake up.

The officer later found a woman, identified as 31-year-old Chanett M. Carter, with a gunshot wound to the back of her shoulder.

Investigators believe that a bullet passed through the door of an adjoining apartment and through the wall striking Carter.

Detectives made contact with a second gunshot victim identified as 19-year-old Isaiah Fritz Walter, who had a gunshot to the back of his shoulder.

Walter was less than cooperative but it is believed he was one of the people invovled in the dispute.

It appears the unknown suspect fired at Walter and an unknown black male who were running up the apartment stairwell.

Anyone with information on the suspect’s identity or witnessed to the shooting should call Bienville Parish Sheriff’s Office at 318-894-9185.
