If you’re online for any amount of time you have likely seen this popular Cardi B “My Momma said” meme.
It shows the rapper at age five with her hand on her hip.
The memes say things like “My Momma said you have to play with me” or “My Momma said you have to take me or you can’t go”.
A Watson Chapel Junior High School in Pine Bluff teacher took the meme to the next level by creating hall passes. Since then, it’s exploded on social media.
Rebecca Newby is in her second year of teaching, but she calls what she does much more than a job.
“This is what I’m called to do and I’m passionate about,” said Ms. Newby.
The creative writing teacher went from grading papers to making the news, all thanks to Cardi B.
“I’m just shocked they have blown up this big,” said Ms. Newby.
She says the popular Cardi B meme reminded her of her students last year so she made that meme into hilarious hall passes and posted them to Facebook.
“I tagged all my teacher friends and my principal and the original caption said, ‘Ms. Wilson, Ms. Newby said I can be in the hallway’ because Ms. Wilson is our principal,” said Ms. Newby.
She says someone posted the pictures on Twitter and quickly her hall passes were retweeted more than 42,000 times. It even got noticed by top Twitter users.
“They were like, ‘Oh my gosh! Chrissy Teigen liked them.’ I’m was like, ‘who’s that?’ And they were like, ‘John Legend’s wife!’ So, I guess this is kind of a big deal,” said Ms. Newby.
They say things like “Ms. Newby said I can go to the library.” Or “Ms. Newby said I can go to the nurse.” Students grab them and they can go to the hall.
She says her students last year wish they were back in her class.
Multiple national sites have picked up Ms. Newby’s hall passes like, BET, Billboard, Buzzfeed, and Pop Sugar.
She never expected it to go this far. She thought it would turn into a running joke at Watson Chapel Junior High.
