Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington says he’s in full support of the Bossier School District’s policy on players and coaches having to stand during the National Anthem.
Whittington says its a privilege for students to participate in extra-curricular activities, not a right.
Full Statement from Sheriff Julian Whittington:
Whenever we see our nation’s flag proudly waving while we are at a parade, driving down the street, or at a neighbor’s house, we recognize it as a symbol of freedom. We are blessed to live in a free country because of men and women who fought and died for the liberties we enjoy so that we can live in peace.
Prayer, Old Glory and our National Anthem are sacred things.
I offer my 100 percent support for Bossier Parish Schools Superintendent Scott Smith and the Bossier Parish School Board in their decision to uphold prayer in our schools and advocate students show respect to our nation’s flag and the National Anthem.
As Superintendent Smith said, students in these extracurricular activities make a choice to participate; it is a privilege, NOT a right. There is a difference. If they choose not to follow the rules of the school sponsor or coach, they can face disciplinary action. Paying proper respect to our flag certainly isn’t too much to ask.
Let me make something very clear – schools uphold rules, we uphold the law. School officials will deal with those students who don’t follow the rules, and law enforcement officers will deal with those who violate the law.
It’s a shame that there are those who choose to disrespect this iconic symbol of our nation’s colors. No personal cause or belief should dictate you show disdain for our nation’s biggest icon that stands for freedom for all people in this country.
Never in my lifetime did I believe that I would have to write such a statement to show my support for prayer and respect for the U.S. flag. I guess when you try to take both of these out of our schools and society, this is what we are left with. Well, as long as I am Sheriff, you have my full support for students to pray and honor to respect our nation’s flag and National Anthem.
Is it too much to ask to just go enjoy a high school football game and not have to witness ANY protest?!
