The community of Carthage mourns the loss a recent graduate student.
The community came out in droves to honor the memory of the young man named Austin Gray. Gray was killed in a car crash Wednesday night on Highway 80 after being struck by another car. He was 18-years-old and recently graduated from Carthage High where he played on the football team.
People filled the gymnasium where they held a vigil in his honor. His mother and friends told stories about him and said he had a great personality and lived life to the fullest. Carthage football players gathered around Gray’s father to pray together.
“Austin was the life of the party. Always had a smile on his face. Big personality. Played on our football team here. Was always just really happy. Really outgoing. It’s a really tough loss for our school and our community,” said Jason Harris, Carthage High School Principal.
A young woman named Kassi Hamm was riding with Gray when the crash happened. She was taken to the hospital but has serious injuries.
Gray’s mother spoke about how her son and Hamm “did everything right.” They were wearing their seatbelts and they were not drinking, but despite that, you just never know when tragedy will happen.
