Celebrity speaks for Texarkana student scholarships

A noted economist and actor is helping local students pay for college.

Ben Stein spoke to a crowd of hundreds of folks in Texarkana as a part of the Farmers Bank and Trust Distinguished Speaker Series.

The inaugural event raised funds for scholarships for Texarkana College students who transition to Texas A & M University – Texarkana to finish their four-year degree. Right now, about 250 students at the university started their studies at Texarkana College.

“Our goal would be to have a scholarship for each and every one of them,” said Emily Cutrer, president of Texas A & M University – Texarkana. “It won’t start out that way, but we’ll do the best we can to make it possible for them.”

Stein is a former presidential speech writer and columnist. He’s also had roles in dozens of movies and television shows, including the ’80s classic ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’.
