The Caddo Parish Commission met today to discuss the future of the Confederate monument in front of the courhouse. At the meeting, they did not openly discuss their views, but citizens made their opinions clear.
“Caddo Parish Commissioners either enjoy wasting tax-paying citizens money and time,” said Brenda, who wished to have her concerns heard in front of some members of the commission. “…and they disregard our laws of the land by ignorance or defiance.”
One commissioner says that his decision will be made by the people he represents, not his own personal opinion.
“I think it’s always best when you’re going to make a decision to get all the pieces of information and I don’t think I can effectively communicate that to all my constituents without knowing who legally owns the land,” said Commissioner Mario Chavez. “So all that I have to go off of is asking my constituents, how do you want me to vote?”
The resolution, brought forward by commissioner Lyndon Johnson, will be to remove the statue to another location, not destroy it.
