Amanda Bowers with the non profit “Gathering of Authors” says after her organization was not given the amount they were awarded in 2016 from the Texarkana Advertising and Promotion Commission, she started digging to find out why.
“We feel that they have misappropriated some funds over the past year to the tune of about $350,000” says Bowers.
She looks over records from the past year and says records do not add up.
She points to a 2014 audit.
“3 years ago a legislative audit found similar misappropriation of funds by the A&P Commission. It doesn’t appear they’ve changed their ways since then.” says Bowers.
Bowers says she’s tried to schedule numerous meetings with the commission, all unsuccessful.
“While the city says it’s the state’s responsibility to govern the A&P and the state tells me that it’s the city’s responsibility , it’s clearly outlined in this investigative report that the city of Texarkana, Arkansas and the mayor are financially responsible for what the A&P does.” says Bowers.
Bowers says the problem is bigger than just her organization
. “It’s your money that you are giving the A&P that they’ve decided to misuse. Our government officials have to be held accountable for that” says Bowers.
We reached out to the A&P Commission and they declined to comment.
