As trash collectors catch up on their routes after the holiday, a friendly reminder from local law enforcement: don’t leave boxes from gifts you unwrapped Christmas morning sitting by the curb.

Officials say that’s just an invitation for thieves to break into your home.

“What that does is advertise some of the things that you’ve gotten for Christmas,” said Shawn Vaughn with the Texarkana Texas Police Department. “Criminals can go around the neighborhood and basically ‘shop’ based upon what they see sitting at the curb on the boxes.”

Instead, officials say you can protect your presents by breaking down those boxes and putting them inside the trash can.

They also say you should wait until it’s trash day to set your items at the curb for pick-up. That gives crooks less time to spot your holiday haul.
