December is Aids Awareness Month. Approximately 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, but one in seven doesn’t know they have the virus.
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
It attacks the body’s immune system that fights infections.
Over time, if left untreated, this leaves a person vulnerable to multiple infections and certain types of cancers.
HIV is a treatable disease, with people living for decades, but it is not curable.
Here in the Ark-La-Tex, the Philadelphia Center is Northwest Louisiana’s only HIV/Aids service organization.
Activities at the Center include:
- Assessment/Care Plan
- On-going Service Planning
- Client Advocacy
- Risk Reduction Counseling
Only 10 states have more residents diagnosed with HIV/Aids than Louisiana.
