Authorities are investigating an early-morning crash that left a man dead in west Shreveport.

Joe Oliver Heads, 36, of Shreveport, was struck by a 2002 Cadillac in the 4100 Block of Marston Avenue at Greenwood Road, west of Curtis Lane. He was taken to Ochsner LSU Health hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:45 a.m.

At approximately 4:24 a.m. on November 17, 2018, Shreveport Police patrol officers were dispatched to the intersection Greenwood Road and Marston Avenue relative to an animal complaint, after a caller notified police that a male had been bitten by several dogs.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Heads had been struck by a vehicle traveling east on Greenwood Road.

Based on information and evidence gathered during the early stages of their inquiry, crash investigators believe the victim was in the vicinity of the 4600 block of Greenwood Road when at least one dog chased him into the road, where he was subsequently struck by a 2002 Cadillac operated by 24-year-old Damien Johnson of Shreveport.

Caddo Parish Animal Control responded to the scene and took custody of the dog.

Johnson voluntarily submitted to routine impairment tests and investigators do not believe he was impaired. The investigation is ongoing.
