Emergency crews clean up peroxide spill on I-30 in Bowie County

Local News

BOWIE COUNTY, TEXAS (KTAL/KMSS) – Emergency crews have been working since early Tuesday morning to clean up a peroxide spill on I-30 at the Leary exit.

The accident happened about 5:30 a.m. when officials said the tractor trailer transporting the peroxide swerved to avoid an accident. Emergency crews said the driver heard his load shift and pulled over on the exit ramp.

Officials said about a 1,000 gallons of 5% hydrogen peroxide spilled. Though it is not hazardous, officials said it is a skin irritant.

One emergency worker came into contact with the solution and had to flush the area of his skin that was exposed.

Interstate traffic is not affected, but the westbound exit ramp at Leary is closed until the spill is cleaned up. Crews are also waiting on another shipping container to help transport the remainder of the load.
