State Fire Marshal investigators are still examining the circumstances surrounding a fire late Wednesday night in Shreveport where the body of an elderly man was recovered.

Investigators responded to 4774 Dixie Garden Drive in Shreveport after Caddo Fire District 5 firefighters were dispatched to the location in reference to a residential structure fire moments before midnight Wednesday. Upon arrival, firefighters observed flames emanating through the roof of the wood-framed house.

After entering the structure, firefighters located the body of 86-year-old Grover Bitt in the living room area of the home, which was severely damaged by the fire. The home had no working smoke alarms at the time of the fire.

The victim’s body was later released to the Caddo Parish Coroner for autopsy after being examined by investigators.

 This investigation is ongoing.
