Tuesday, the Salvation Army of Texarkana conducted its homeless count. The annual event assists the charity in getting grants to help those in need.
Tuesday morning, the charity served up hot coffee along with cocoa for kids. Officials say last year’s homeless count was four hundred and fourteen, the highest it had been in years. Major David Feeser said, “It gives us that ability to be able to have a face to face meeting with them to let them know the resources that are available for the homeless people.”
Edward Monroe was among those showing up Tuesday morning. He lives in a tent and is thankful for the Salvation Army. “I can get commodities or I can go up and use their shower 3 nights a week, you know, there’s a lot of benefits even though I stay out in the woods.” Monroe said.
The homeless count will continue through dinner Tuesday night.
