The tax cut and jobs act of 2017 established a new economic development program called “Opportunity Zones.” The federal program will give tax breaks to businesses which move into low-income areas. Governor John Bel Edwards will nominate 25% of the state’s low-income tracts to the U.S. Treasury Department. You can go online and nominate areas you believe need help at www.opportunitylouisiana.com/opportunity-zones. Sen. Gregory Tarver feels this is a great opportunity for communities like Cedar Grove and MLK. “A lot of people do not want to invest in these areas because of the crime rate that we have. We, in Shreveport, do not have the necessary new industry coming in here like we should have,” said Tarver. You have until March 16th to nominate.
