CHATHAM, La. – (5/9/19) Jimmie Davis State Park is closed until further notice due until a storm damage survey is complete.
The state park, near Chatham, took a direct hit from a possible tornado at approximately 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8. As a result of the storm, there appears to be major structural damage to most buildings and extensive tree damage throughout the park. The park is closed until further notice pending a comprehensive assessment of all damage. ReserveAmerica is in the process of contacting guests with overnight stays during this time.
Less than 50 people were inside the park, and everyone was accounted for after the storm passed. Most people evacuated safely; however, a few families remained with their campers and are being evacuated once roadways within the park are sufficiently cleared. One family had to be moved from a camper into a cabin for safety purposes. No major injuries are reported, just minor scrapes and scratches.
Lt. Governor Nungesser would like to thank Jackson Parish Sheriff Andy Brown and his staff along with the Ward 4 Volunteer Fire Department for their speedy arrival and assistance and the staff at Jimmie Davis State Park for assisting visitors to safety.
