CADDO PARISH, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – LA Hwy 1 in south Caddo Parish is expected to reopen at 6 p.m. Friday after a derailment shut down part of the roadway earlier in the week.

It happened just before 5 p.m. Tuesday near Yearwood Rd. when a saltwater truck crossed the tracks in front of a Union Pacific train, according to the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office. Around 12-15 cars and the locomotive derailed at the front of the line and another six derailed in the rear.

The engineer was taken to Willis-Knighton Pierremont. The driver of the saltwater truck was not injured.

CPSO says the cause of the collision and resulting derailment is still under investigation.

While there were no leaks of hazardous materials, the road was closed to all traffic between LA 175 in Caddo Parish and LA Hwy. 509 in Red River Parish while crews worked to clean it up.

The cleanup is continuing, according to the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Motorists are urged to use caution and watch for workers in the area and on the roadside.
