Lawmakers, residents discuss criminal justice reform

Local News

Criminal justice reform may be changing.

“Obviously, you can always make the system better,” says district attorney James Stewart. “We’re looking at ways to make it more productive both from a people aspect and an economical.”

Stewart along with others formed a panel to discuss issues on the state level to residents at Morningstar Baptist Church on Wednesday night.

“If you’re going to fight crime in a smart and intelligent manner, those people who deserve to be behind bars should be,” said Congressman Cedric Richmond. “But, those people who don’t should not be. That way, we’re not wasting the precious resources we have incarcerating people who shouldn’t be there.”
