You can volunteer to help local kids learn to read.
The Step-Forward organization is training volunteers to spend one-hour a week reading to school children.
They say last year nearly two-thousand third grade students in Northwest Louisiana were not reading on grade level.
Around 200 people volunteered last year and they’ll need more this year.
“If a child is not reading proficiently by the end of third grade they are four times more likely to drop out of school and in our community around 33-percent of our third grade students were not reading on grade level,” said Laura Alderman, Step Forward executive director.
The Literacy Volunteer Program orientation starts in July.
