Local flight paramedic returns home from Harvey

Local

An Ark-La-Tex fight paramedic has returned home after helping those affected by Hurricane Harvey as part of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS).

Jennifer Norton, who works with AirVac Lifeteam out of DeQueen Ark., is a native of Ida, but grew up in Shreveport and attended Byrd High School. She now serves as a member of an NDMS Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT).

Norton was among 35 emergency medical professionals from the Arkansas 1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team deployed to Texas August 30 through September 6 in support of the NDMS Hurricane Harvey response.

As of today, NDMS personnel along with U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (USPHS) officers have provided care to more than 5,300 people affected by Harvey.

The NDMS is a federal program that can support communities with medical care and mortuary assistance during disasters or public health emergencies at the request of states; NDMS is among the resources made available by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR).

The NDMS teams now have moved into Florida in anticipation of Irma making landfall.  Saturday, HHS Secretary Tom Price briefed President Trump on the current preparations, that included moving more than 500 medical and related personnel into Orlando to assist the state with medical and public health needs when Hurricane Irma makes landfall.

HHS called in seven NDMS teams, including community doctors and nurses from around the country, and two teams along with two teams from U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps to be in place ready to respond when and where needed.

This time the NDMS team members are deploying from Alabama, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

These teams joined U.S. Public Health Service officers as well as NDMS medical personal already staged in Orlando from Tennessee, Alabama, Massachusetts, Wisconsin and Hawaii. Additional medical teams are on alert to be called in as needed.
