TEXARKANA, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) – Some non-profit organizations in east Texas are banking on a boost of community support as they work to raise funds and awareness through an online event.
Texarkana College is one of several non-profits participating in East Texas Giving Day. It’s an online fundraiser that officials with the school said they hope will help get more students in the classroom.
“A lot of people do not attend college because they just simply can’t afford it, and we are trying to make it more attainable for them and make their education a little more affordable,” said Katie Andrus, director of the Texarkana College Foundation.
To help break down that financial barrier, the Texarkana College Foundation is collecting donations for scholarships. Each donation for the school scheduled from now until April 30 on EastTexasGivingDay.org will be matched up to $20,000, thanks to an anonymous gift from a former student.
“To attend Texarkana College it costs about $3,000 a year, so it would cover a lot of students,” said Andrus.
Domestic Violence Prevention is another first-time participant in East Texas Giving Day.
“Our shelter is at full capacity right now, so we very much need donations to be able to provide items, those essential items, to the clients of the shelter,” said Jennifer Lacefield, a social service specialist for the organization.
They also have an anonymous donor who’s agreed to match all donations up to $5,000. The organization provides support services to about 800 victims of domestic violence and sexual assault annually.
“So that they can have the tools and empowerment they need to flee their abusers and establish safer and healthier lives for themselves and their children,” said Lacefield.
In total, 14 Bowie County non-profit organizations are participating in the online donation drive.
“It’s just an opportunity for area residents and community supporters to give to the non-profit of their choice,” said Andrus.
You can support area non-profits by logging onto the East Texas Giving Day website to schedule a donation from now until midnight April 30.
