Nearly 80 undocumented immigrants, including 13 children, were found inside a trailer of a big rig near Laredo, Texas, authorities said.
On Friday, immigration authorities intercepted the vehicle which was traveling north on U.S. 83 and
discovered the human cargo during a secondary inspection.
The Border Patrol said in a statement that the immigrants were in “good health.” The driver, who was a US citizen, was arrested.
“These criminal organizations view these individuals as mere commodities without regard for their safety. The blatant disregard for human life will not be tolerated,” said Laredo Sector Assistant Chief Patrol Agent Gabriel Acosta in a news release. “We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to disrupt and dismantle these organizations and prosecute those responsible.”
The 76 people inside were from the countries of Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, according to the Border Patrol.
Border agents have reported an increase in the use of trucks to smuggle people. During the summer, 10 people died and nearly three dozen were hospitalized after being found in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer in San Antonio.
